CHAPTER XII: JJ SHARES

"About a year ago or so, a new doctor arrived in town. His name is Lynch, Bryant Lynch...and he came here from Birmingham. He came into the drugstore to set up an account right away, and I helped him do it. My sense at the time was that there was something amiss. I can't explain why but I have learned long ago to trust my instincts."

"Hear Hear," Rose and Feelie chimed in simultaneously.

"SO," JJ continued...

"I started doing some detective work into our Doctor and what I found was not comforting. It seems that while back in Alabama, several of his female patients...mostly older or at least single and alone, had come up missing and while the authorities in Alabama couldn't find any hard evidence to link him to the disappearances, they suspected that he was not entirely innocent.

Eventually the heat I suspect got a bit intense and he sold out there and came here."

We all sat in stunned silence until Ofelia uttered,
"Oh my Gawd."

"Yes, young lady. Indeed. Now, like I say I cannot prove anything, but LiliBeth had started having migraines and she decided to go to this Dr. Lynch. Dr. Morse who had been treating her was retiring and so she decided to give Dr Lynch a try. He started treating her migraines, but they seemed to only keep getting worse. My suspicion is that was not a coincidence. And, by the way Rose, your cousin is NOT the first of his patients, here in Natchez, to come up absent without leave."

"Really," Rose murmured, astonished.

"Yep. But now, we have to find out if this is the good doctors doing, and if so how and why. I will do everything I can. I truly love Lilibeth, but even if I didn't this is serious...and shouldn't be happening to anyone...and if what I suspect is true this could get dangerous, girls. Beau, Poke."

"Hawney, we is used to that. Bring it on."

JJ laughed for a minute, but then looked harder at her and then the rest of them and saw they were serious.

"So be it then," He said quietly and so it was.

"Agreed," Feelie said, firmly.

"Beau, Poke. JJ is right. This could get really dicey. So, you stay clear."

"NO," Beau said loud and firm.

"She is MY MOTHER. I am in. You are? I am."

His resolve and firm voice said clearly he had NO INTENTION of sitting this or anything else out."
